'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sky Blue Season: August

Coventry City's 2009/10 season got underway a day later than the rest of the Championship but it was worth the wait for Sky Blues fans as they defeated Roy Keane's heavily-fancied Ipswich Town side in front of the Sky cameras.

New signings Patrick Van Aanholt, Sammy Clingan and Michael McIndoe all started against the Blues, McIndoe having arrived from Bristol City a few days earlier.

Chris Coleman's squad still looked thin however and that showed when the manager made changes for the League Cup tie against Hartlepool, Adam Boyd's extra-time winner seeing off the Sky Blue youngsters.

England Under-21 international defender Martin Cranie was signed in time for City's now obligatory win against Barnsley at Oakwell and also played his part as the Sky Blues keep a clean sheet at Doncaster a few days later.

A solid start then for Coleman's side, boosted further by the loan signing of Jack Cork from Chelsea but the month ended with a narrow home loss against Swansea and a more worrying away defeat at Blackpool.

'Our second 45 minutes were abysmal,' admits the manager afterwards.

'I have a dressing room full of players who are unhappy, disappointed and disgruntled and rightly so.

'Their keeper could have come off the pitch and we just have not turned up to the match for the past few games.'

'I have to take the blame as I have asked the players to play in formation and something is not working.'
