'If It's Football, It's Vital'

On this day - 1st January

The greatest year in Coventry City's history started inauspiciously as the Sky Blues lost 1-0 at home to Luton Town on 1 January 1987.

Brian Stein's goal separated the two sides with former City 'keeper Les Sealey keepng his old club out at the other end.

Although the FA Cup run had yet to start, there was a sense of optimism around Highfield Road going into the new year.

After avoiding relegation on the final day of the season for three years running, George Curtis and John Sillett had put together a solid group of players and City stayed in and around the top-half of the table throughout the campaign.

Five days earlier one of the best games in years at HR had taken place when Spurs were beaten 4-3 in a thriller. An even more dramatic game would take place between the two sides later on in the season!
