'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The rumour round-up (1)

Since the end of last season Coventry City have been linked with a whole host of potential new signings, with boss Iain Dowie making 9 additions to his squad to date.

Now that the transfer activity is set to die down while the ownership of the club is sorted out, Vital Coventry looks at the players who have been mentioned as possibles for the Ricoh Arena this summer.

Leon Best - linked with a number of clubs including Leicester City and Nottingham Forest over the summer, the young striker signed a three-year deal with the Sky Blues last week. Although he was out of contract at St Mary's, Southampton are due compensation due to the player's age.

Gary Borrowdale - opted to team up with his former boss Iain Dowie after the expiry of his Crystal Palace contract. As with Best, compensation will have to be paid for the left-back.

Ellery Cairo - released by Hertha Berlin in the summer, the Dutch winger joined Coventry on the same day as fellow countryman Arjan De Zeeuw.

Kris Commons - the talented midfielder, also linked with Preston and Bristol City over the summer, is staying with Nottingham Forest after signing a new one-year deal at the City Ground.

Arjan De Zeeuw - the 37-year-old centre-half agreed a one-year deal at the Ricoh Arena after leaving Wigan Athletic at the end of last season.

Julian Gray - freed by Birmingham City following their promotion to the Premiership, the 27-year-old winger has joined former Crystal Palace team-mates Michael Hughes and Gary Borrowdale at Coventry.

Luke Guttridge - Colchester United have snapped up the 25-year-old former Orient midfielder on a free transfer.

Will Haining - turned down a new contract offer at Oldham Athletic to sign for SPL side St Mirren.

Markus Heikkinen - the Finnish defender has signed a deal with Rapid Vienna following Luton's relegation from the Championship last season.

Lee Hendrie - the freed Aston Villa midfielder is still without a club despite plenty of interest from both the Premiership (Middlesbrough and Derby) and the Championship (Leicester City and Stoke).

Michael Hughes - the veteran midfielder has signed a one-year deal with Coventry after his Crystal Palace deal expired at the end of last season.
