'If It's Football, It's Vital'

He played just once - Chris Whyte

As debuts go, veteran defender Chris Whyte's for Coventry City could not have been much better.

Ron Atkinson's side had won just once in sixteen games at the start of the 1995/96 season and the manager was without a host of defenders for the visit of reigning champions Blackburn Rovers.

An SOS went out to former Arsenal and Leeds centre-half Whyte who signed on loan in time for the game which City won 5-0 at a snow-bound Highfield Road.

The return of Paul Williams and Richard Shaw for the next game however meant the end of Whyte's short Sky Blues career.

ah, but what a game. Was that one of the first appearances for an orange ball at HR?

The orange ball was definitely used. That was a strange season under Ron. We seemed to buy new players every week but kept getting worse and worse!
