City Run Out Of Steam On Their Big Day

City Run Out Of Steam On Their Big Day

The result and the performance were not in keeping with the build-up but Coventry City's Community Day has to be judged a big success after over 28,000 people came to the Ricoh Arena for a League Two fixture against Accrington Stanley.

A lot of hard work from a lot of people came together and resulted in thousands of local schoolchildren and their families enjoying their day while many lapsed supporters responded to the club's initiative and endeavour by making a return to CV6.

The headlines were the free tickets for schools and £5 tickets for everyone else but all of the other little touches contributed to the day.

Free parking, reduced price programmes, the fan village in the exhibition hall.

They all helped make the day a success and will have gained the club enough credit in the bank to offset the loss that pushed Mark Robins' side further down the table.

It's tempting to say 'typical City' about a big occasion resulting in a poor performance but, however disappointing it was to concede a soft early goal and then never threaten to equalise it, the mitigating circumstances in this case probably ring true.

The FA Cup run has resulted in a hectic schedule and the squad has been further stretched by recent injury and illness problems.

It may be that the promotion/play-off challenge fades away even more in recent weeks, let's hope that is not the case but whatever happens there has been progress made and foundations laid for next season.

That will be at the Ricoh come what may following Friday's announcement and, on balance, it has still been a positive weekend for the football club.
