Can Community Day Be The Start Of Something?

Can Community Day Be The Start Of Something?

Those who like to look through the results section of a Sunday sports supplement and scan the attendance figures as well as the scores will be taken aback slightly when they see something approaching 30,000 given as the gate for Coventry City's home game against Accrington Stanley this Saturday.

Firstly, those behind the idea of a Community Day deserve plenty of praise. It has been well-publicised and all of the decisions taken, from free tickets to local schoolchildren, to £5 tickets elsewhere, the opening up of both ends to home supporters and free parking as well, have been the right ones.

The day deserves to be a success and hopefully City's home form will continue to make it a good afternoon on the pitch as well.

But it is just one day and on two different levels it needs to be the springboard for something better in the future.

Most obviously there has been no communication at all about where the club will be playing next season, the 'imminent' announcement of before Christmas having failed to materialise although The Mirror is reporting on Thursday that a deal is close to staying in CV6.

But if the Sky Blues are to still be at the Ricoh in 2018/19 and beyond then the process of engaging with supporters has to continue on a regular basis.

That doesn't mean having £5 tickets for each match but it does mean that if there are going to be large parts of the stadium empty then why not fill up a block with schoolchildren?

And make the experience of going to and being at the stadium something more than the joyless trudge it has become.

The free parking and fan village are perfect examples of what can be done on that score.
