Sky Blues Plan Tribute To FA Cup Hero

Sky Blues Plan Tribute To FA Cup Hero

Coventry City will pay tribute on Saturday to their former striker Cyrille Regis whose death was confirmed earlier this week aged 59.

Any such passing is, first and foremost a matter for family and friends and on such a level there is the shock at losing someone who had so many years still ahead of him, time to spend with family and friends.

That shock is, perhaps, magnified by the clips that have been playing all week that capture Cyrille in his physical prime, captured forever in the moment, holding off opponents and barrelling through defenders, for West Brom as part of Ron Atkinson's excellent side and the Sky Blues as they marched on to Wembley in 1987.

For City supporters it inevitably brings back thoughts not just of the player himself but also the Wembley win (Cyrille's goal in the quarter-final win at Sheffield Wednesday has played in my mind more than once this week, his strength to hold the ball up for Dave Bennett and then a change of pace to receive the perfect return ball) and the lifetime of memories it has provided.

Much of the credit for the Sky Blues' unlikely triumph has always been put down to their togetherness and it will have been a week that has hit Regis' former colleagues hard.

His impact, of course, was felt much more widely than the West Midlands (where he must rank as one of the most popular players ever to have graced the region, seemingly cutting across fan loyalties and provoking very little negativity) to that felt by younger black players making their way in the game.

The Sky Blues have announced that, in addition to a minute's applause at the Swindon game this Saturday, Cyrille will feature heavily in a special programme and a half-time tribute on the big screen.

The Legends Day on Saturday 3rd March against Lincoln City, held in association with the Coventry City Former Players Association, will also be dedicated to Cyrille.
