Betting On The Match

Betting On The Match

Betting on the match has changed somewhat over the years, from the first kiosks appearing at Highfield Road to the modern day where almost any aspect of a game can be gambled on from your mobile phone.

A couple of personal memories, good and bad, include backing Dion Dublin to be the first goalscorer, on his home debut, and City to beat Leeds 2-1 in September 1994.

A late goal for the visitors meant a nervous final few minutes for the Sky Blues but was greeted with a muffled yelp of delight by me and a friend in the West Terrace!

Robbie Keane's home debut was marked with odds, I seem to recall, of 6/1 to net the opening goal of the game against Derby County in August 1999 and half of the stadium seemed to be on judging by the queue for payout at the end of the match.

A few years further on and a few pounds on Gary McSheffrey to score the opener and the Sky Blues to beat Barnsley 2-0 was set to secure a nice return when Carl Baker added to McSheffrey's goal with just four minutes remaining.

Then Jordan Clarke, of all people, struck a superb third goal from outside the area and which I 'celebrated' with the same enthusiasm as a consolation in a 5-1 defeat!

Now, even with City in League Two the range of markets on a game is well over 100 and you can cash out many of those before the final whistle, an option that wasn't available when you were clutching your betting slip and hoping nothing would spoil your winning bet.
