2018 Starts With City In The Promotion Places

Another hard-fought 1-0 victory, their second in three days, against Chesterfield on New Year's Day, saw Coventry City move into the League Two automatic promotion places as 2018 began.

Whatever happens over the next five months, Mark Robins, his backroom team and his squad of players deserve huge credit for the season they have had to date.

Many of that squad are young players who endured a horrendous campaign in 2016/17, the win at Wembley in the Football League Trophy apart, with relegation on the pitch and a managerial merry-go-round off it.

They have bounced back superbly, gelling well with the new signings that Robins made early and decisively at the beginning of the summer.

But the manager has also had to deal with key injuries, over and above the normal knocks and niggles that every club has to contend with.

Tony Andreu was meant to be the final piece of the jigsaw when he arrived in pre-season while Jodi Jones was a strong contender to be League Two's player of the year when he was ruled out for the long-term.

When City went down to a dismal defeat at Morecambe early in December it could have signalled a fall down the table that rendered any new signings made this month as immaterial.

Instead, through grit and determination on difficult afternoons and evenings, they have won four of the following five and continue to boast the meanest defence in the division.

New faces are already in the building to boost attacking options but more twists and turns lie ahead.
