'If It's Football, It's Vital'

On this day: Big Ron arrives

Ron Atkinson's first game in charge of Coventry City, 12 years ago today on 18 February 1995, added 4,000 to the gate at Highfield Road and inspired City to a 2-0 win over West Ham United.

Phil Neal had been sacked earlier in the week despite a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace and after agreeing compensation with Aston Villa following his departure earlier in the season, Big Ron was approached to take over.

£300,000 secured his first signing, Kevin Richardson who made an immediate debut against the Hammers, with Peter Ndlovu and Mike Marsh scoring the goals to give the home side a crucial win.

A week late over 20,000 turned out to watch a 4-2 win over Leicester City and the honeymoon continued into March when Ndlovu's hat-trick defeated Liverpool at Anfield before five defeats in six made it another nail-biting end to the season.
