Two 1-1 draws this week for Coventry City were overshadowed by the loss of star man Jodi Jones for the remainder of the season after he suffered a cruciate ligament injury.
It is the second major blow for Sky Blues boss Mark Robins after barely seeing summer signing Tony Andreu in action before he too was ruled out for the 2017/18 campaign.
Two seasons ago that would surely have seen City enter the emergency loan market for a short-term signing but, even though Robins may be keenly awaiting the opening of the January window, the fact that that option no longer exists does open up opportunities for the young players at the club.
Jordan Ponticelli is a prime example of someone who may have been pushed down the pecking order previously by a loan signing but who has been getting first-team chances of his own over the past month or so.
The attendance at the Ricoh Arena for the Crawley game plumbed another low for a league fixture on a Saturday and there will be even fewer in the ground for Boreham Wood's visit next weekend.
That doesn't mean the FA Cup doesn't retain its magic for many clubs, however, and the National League side's supporters are eagerly awaiting their trip to CV6 which is good to see.
And they will be travelling in confidence after a win against Woking saw the Wood move into the play-off places.
Meanwhile, Sky Blues loanee Darragh Leahy made his Nuneaton Town debut as a substitute in Saturday's comfortable 5-1 success over North Ferriby United in the FA Trophy.
