Fringe Benefits From Sky Blues v Saddlers
The Football League Trophy may be a long way below promotion on Mark Robins' list of priorities for the season but a much-changed Coventry City side provided plenty of positives for their manager as the holders took on League One Walsall on Tuesday evening.
The Sky Blues turned around a half-time deficit, thanks to a penalty from Marc McNulty and a strike from Jordan Ponticelli, before former Ricoh Arena loanee Daniel Agyei levelled in stoppage time for the hosts to take the game to penalties.
There, McNulty missed his second spot-kick of the night but to no overall effect as City triumphed 4-3 to claim an extra point in the group stage.
Both of the names on the visitors score-sheet during the 90 minutes will please Robins.
McNulty has had a slower start to life as a City player than he would have hoped, the impact of Duckens Nazon being one of the reasons why, while Ponticelli continues to confirm his promise as a striker who will get goals at any level given the opportunity.
With plenty of other fringe players getting an opportunity to shine as well, the game served its purpose for a manager who knows getting out of League Two is the only thing that really matters this year.
