Sky Blue Signings: Can Striker Hit The Ground Running?

Sky Blue Signings: Can Striker Hit The Ground Running?

Identifying Coventry City's need for more goals in 2017/18 was the easy part after the Sky Blues netted just 37 times in their 46 League One games.

Finding the solution is what Mark Robins is paid his money for and the manager made sure that a striker was part of his brisk early summer transfer business.

24-year-old Marc McNulty was the man in question and he moved to the Ricoh Arena after the expiry of his Sheffield United contract and he will be keen to get regular football under his belt as, hopefully, the focal point of the Coventry attack.

The presence of Billy Sharp and others in the Sheffield United front line as they eased towards the League One title meant that McNulty appeared just four times for the Blades last season, his appearances supplemented by 15 games, 10 of those as a substitute, for Bradford City during a loan spell that ended in January.

Just one senior goal during the campaign shows what a frustrating year it was for a player who enjoyed a productive period with Portsmouth in 2015/16.

The hope is that Robins will be able to fashion a side in the mould of his first spell as Sky Blues manager in which the likes of Carl Baker, Franck Moussa and Gary McSheffrey created plenty of opportunities for David McGoldrick to put his name on the scoresheet on a regular basis.
