City Will Defend Their Trophy

Coventry City will defend their EFL Trophy in 2017/18 after a majority of clubs voted to keep the present format of the much-maligned competition.

Three options had been given to the clubs, one of which was to scrap it altogether, the second being a reversion to the previous format of League One and Two clubs only being involved.

The third, to still allow the Academy teams of Premier League and Championship clubs to take part, has been approved albeit with some small changes.

There will be greater flexibility given to League One and Two clubs over team selection after fines for 'weakened` teams were handed out in the season just ended.

And 'invited' teams will play all of their matches away from home.
