Battling Sky Blues Fall Into The Basement

Battling Sky Blues Fall Into The Basement

Coventry City continued their improvement under the management of Mark Robins, having the better of Friday's 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic, but it has not been enough to keep the Sky Blues in League One.

Relegation was confirmed on the final whistle of a game at the Ricoh Arena that was delayed at the start by supporters from both clubs protesting against their respective owners.

While the Addicks will hope to rebuild from a League One base next season it is the basement for City as they head into the final year of their current agreement to play in CV6.

Robins has hardly put a foot wrong since beginning his second spell as manager of the club and, all things being equal, few would back against him being able to put together a squad capable of bouncing straight back up.

But the world of Coventry City is a strange one and there remain so many variables that could prevent him doing just that, from the stadium dispute to the large number of supporters cutting their ties with the club.

Speaking to the official website after the game, Robins said: 'We need to make sure we rebuild solidly so we have enough strength in depth. There is a definite amount of quality in the young players, but they need some more experience around them.

'It's hard to take, but they can learn from this. Even though they'll have a relegation on their CV, it is something you can learn from and make sure it never happens again.'
