New City Boss Robins Makes First Signing

New City Boss Robins Makes First Signing

Having identified the total lack of a recruitment policy as being one of the major factors in Coventry City's decline over the past year, from a position of challenging for promotion to the Championship to staring at the drop into League Two, the Sky Blues have taken their first steps towards addressing the problem.

In the wake of Mark Venus' departure from the club, new manager Mark Robins has appointed former Southampton midfielder Tommy Widdrington to his backroom staff with a brief to head up the recruitment programme.

The 45-year-old makes the move from Eastbourne Borough where he has been manager for the past five years, Robins telling the official CCFC website that Widdrington has 'come on board as part of the club`s need to develop a strategic recruitment department, which will be taking shape over the coming weeks.'

That is a similar remit to the one Venus had when he arrived at the club alongside Tony Mowbray and it seemed to be one he was living up to when the likes of Adam Armstrong arrived at the club in the summer of 2015.

But, as Tim Fisher has admitted, the following three transfer windows have been a disaster zone with the quality of the Sky Blues squad gradually getting lower and lower.

Widdrington is tasked with reversing that trend and getting together a team of scouts to find the players that will win promotion from League Two next season.

Hopefully, given the new man's Non-League background over the past few seasons, Widdrington will also be happy to take a chance on players from that level of the game.

It shouldn't be rocket science to get a team of scouts in place, watching matches up and down the country and also implementing a system/database of players to be monitored. It's an appointment that needed to be made, a shame it is being done as we are heading into League Two.
