City`s Heroics Shouldn't Let EFL Off The Hook

City`s Heroics Shouldn't Let EFL Off The Hook

Coventry City, Oxford United and their respective sets of supporters served a very entertaining afternoon at Wembley Stadium on Sunday for those in attendance and those watching on television.

Making light of their league position and impending relegation, the Sky Blues were solid across the back line and attacked with a freedom rarely seen this season while the U's gave it their all in the final stages as they tried desperately to force an equaliser.

Naturally the game and the celebrations that followed have been used to try and justify the success (or otherwise) of the Football League Trophy after a campaign filled with negative headlines and sparsely-attended matches.

But Sunday's match was a success despite the changes to the competition and not because of them.

It was only at the semi-final stage, when no further Under-23 teams were involved (or Under-21, or B teams, the lack of a uniform description for these sides showing how poorly thought through their introduction was) that supporters felt able to put their weight behind their team and it was only the specific circumstances surrounding the Sky Blues that made Sunday's final a unique occasion.

I expect the league to plough on regardless with the competition next season but their focus should be more on what they can do to ensure club owners are fulfilling their obligations to the institutions they are the custodians of.
