39,441 Contrasting Emotions at Wembley

39,441 Contrasting Emotions at Wembley

Coventry City have been allocated 39,441 tickets for the Football League Trophy final on Sunday 2 April with ticket sales set to commence shortly.

After 30 years without a trip to the national stadium, Sky Blues supporters will surely respond in droves to the chance of a day out in North London,

But there is another factor in play as well; the continued and very real threat to the existence of the club.

Years of off-field wrangling show no signs of letting up and this season, with on-field fortunes nosediving in tandem, has seen thousands of fans come close to ending their lifetime association with the club.

And yet, that part of the brain that refuses to give up on CCFC received a jolt when the final whistle blew on the semi-final against Wycombe Wanderers.

It sparked memories of why we have followed the club for so many years and through so many difficult periods and it is why people will flock to Wembley despite genuine and justified grievances with the owners.

But it will also mean that the final, against either Luton Town or Oxford United, will mean many different things to each individual supporter.

To those who are in their early twenties or younger, there should be the enjoyment of the day itself, the build-up outside and inside the stadium and (hopefully) roaring City on to victory.

These supporters have known nothing but dismal times, on the pitch and off it, and they deserve huge credit for following the Sky Blues home and away, up and down the country.

For older supporters there may also be more than a touch of sadness to the occasion, at what has been lost over that twenty-year period since Highfield Road was a vibrant ground hosting the Sky cameras and the top teams on a regular basis.

Will the day act as a rallying point? Giving everyone the lift in spirits they need to continue the fight.

Or it will be more akin to a farewell party as our beloved Sky Blues face an even more uncertain future once the final whistle goes?
