City's Parachute Panic

Norwich City's potential pursuit of Coventry City's Callum Wilson will presumably be fuelled by the parachute payments the Canaries will receive this summer after their relegation from the Premier League.

No Sky Blues fan will doubt Wilson's ability to be a success at Championship level should he leave but the temptation to gamble on a quick return to the top-flight is very clear.

City received just over 3m in the summer of 2001 and also got back the 6m they had paid for Craig Bellamy the previous year. With the extent of the club's financial dark cloud just beginning to emerge perhaps that should have been the start of a drive to cut costs but with a new stadium still in the pipeline the urge to spend our way back was overwhelming.

Lee Hughes was the man that Strachan gambled on (in addition to 1m spent on the injury-plagued Keith O'Neill) with a penny over 5m being bid to trigger an escape clause in his West Bromwich Albion contract. The Hawthorns hero had a decent enough first season with City, scoring 14 league goals, but ultimately the gamble failed and City missed out on the play-offs.

A couple of months into the following season Hughes was back with the Baggies as part of a fire-sale as the decline accelerated.
