City Defender Backed for Championship

Coventry City development director Steve Waggott believes Cyrus Christie would have been in a stronger position to leave the Sky Blues this summer if he had signed a new contract last season.

Interest has been muted so far in the full-back which has led to talk that he will try his hand in MLS and that may be because of a loss of form towards the end of the campaign.

Waggott feels the 21-year-old is good enough to play in the Championship but told the Coventry Telegraph: 'It's such a shame he didn't sign with the rest of the young lads when they extended all their contracts.

'In my opinion, it slightly impacted on him with an unsettled period in terms of his form and there was a little bit of a dip.

'Had he been more settled with a release clause of X then he could have held his form a little bit higher.'
