Coventry City's transfer embargo was, surprisingly, relaxed recently with the resulting signings of Mathieu Manset and Andy Webster made after it emerged that the club could replace players who had left.
Initially this was though to be on a 'one-in, one-out' basis with the incoming player on a lower wage but it appears that, if two players are released (Chris Dunn and William Edjenguele last week) then 75% of the saved wages can be spent on a new signing.
Suddenly the Football League seem to be taking a keen interest in the finances of the club and ensuring that they can pay their way (in a football sense on players and wages).
This isn't a bad thing but it is surely just the tip of the iceberg of what the authorities should be doing to make sure the books balance. Football's narrow thinking extends merely to those within the game and the League clearly are not interested in making sure clubs pay their obligations to outside parties.
CCFC have been allowed to take their place in the competition after a complex process of administration that is beyond the understanding of the man in the stands.
The club's owners, as a business, did what they felt they had to do but the League should have been working closely with them since the original withholding of the rental payments to ACL, a time when new players were still being signed, to try and solve the situation.
This doesn't just apply to Coventry City of course but to every club among the 72 under the FL's jurisdiction. Anything connected with a club is a football matter and anything negative such as this damages the integrity of the game.
