City Look North And Find Elvis!

Steven Pressley's appointment as the new Coventry City manager was expected to be confirmed on Thursday with the Sky Blues negotiating the release of the former Scotland defender from his job at Falkirk to replace Mark Robins.

Following the sacking of Andy Thorn and then the departure of Robins, City certainly cannot be accused of making the obvious appointment with the likes of Phil Brown, Paul Ince and Eric Black (mentioned in connection with the job every time it has become available since his sacking) featuring prominently in the betting alongside recently axed League One bosses Keith Curle and Paul Dickov.

Robins was a slightly more conventional choice than Pressley but had been out of the game for quite a while before taking charge and certainly wouldn't have featured on many people's initial short-lists.

Pressley's spell as a Sky Blues player certainly doesn't come into it as it was 15 years ago and short-lived but he follows in the footsteps of many a manager from the Scottish Leagues to have come south over the years.

Some have succeeded, some have failed and, while Pressley inherits a squad that is currently on a par with anything in League One, the task ahead is a huge one for the 39-year-old as he returns to a club almost unrecognisable from his short spell there under Phil Neal and Ron Atkinson at Highfield Road and still battling against potential financial meltdown.

nothing against Pressley but I hoped that this time Eric Black would have been given the chance.

It's hard to have a view on this as he has been working in the Scottish 1st Division which is off the radar for most in England. The club have obviously done their homework. It's a big step up but not as big as appointing someone with no managerial experience.
