'If It's Football, It's Vital'

On This Day: Cobblers to Christmas!

'Do They Know It's Christmas?' topped the charts on 6th January 1990 but Band Aid II, the collective who got together under the auspices of occasional Sky Blues fan Pete Waterman to reprise the hit song, were a pale imitation of what had gone before.

It was the same story for Coventry City as their FA Cup-winning squad of 1987 tried for one last hurrah under John Sillett.

It was not to be however as Northampton Town followed in the footsteps of Sutton United the year before and humbled the Sky Blues in the famous cup competition.

Waterman drafted in Sonia (the half-time 'entertainment' at Highfield Road in City's first live Sky appearance in the Premier League) for the second Band Aid song but there was little to sing in the rain about for those fans on Northampton's open away terrace as the Cobblers wrote their way into the Sunday newspapers.
