Sky Blues Are Spot On

Coventry City gained a deserved win against Sheffield United in Tuesday night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy but had to go through their second penalty shoot-out of the competition to do it.

The Sky Blues were the only side who made an effort to win the game in normal time but struggled to create any clear-cut chances until after an own goal had given them the lead as a Blades defender turned in Steven Jennings' cross, a reward for the midfielder's enterprising break from deep.

City were confident in their individual roles and grew in confidence after the goal until United were handed an equaliser as Joe Murphy pushed a long-range shot into the path of an incoming attacker.

That meant penalties and a chance for Murphy to make a save and watch another spot-kick clear the bar while his colleagues netted four times to ensure a place in the semi-finals.

A good night all round for the club as their 5 ticket offer resulted in a healthy 10,000+ crowd and a good family atmosphere.

Reaction: Blades boss Danny Wilson said afterwards: "The bonus points we take from the game is some of the young lads who have come into the side against a strong Coventry team.

"They made it difficult for us and we did for them, so chances in the whole game were at a premium."

Wilson also felt his side had a 'mental block' when it came to the penalty shoot-out while Mark Robins, who praised the Sky Blues' fans in attendance, was 'relaxed' about it as his players were in confident mood.

A solid performance. We controlled the game (as we should have done with a strong side against a slightly weakened Blades) and got a break with the goal. Very good professional penalties.
