Coventry City chief executive Tim Fisher described the club this week as being 'divorced' both from success and its community of supporters when explaining the reasons why Andy Thorn had been sacked as manager just a few days previously.
Caretaker boss Richard Shaw therefore provided a welcome dose of marriage guidance on Tuesday when his side won an exciting League Cup tie against Birmingham City thanks to Carl Baker's extra-time goal.
Having gone into further detail regarding Thorn in a bid to stop some of the rumours that surrounded his departure, Fisher confirmed that both he and Steve Waggott had been putting the manager 'under scrutiny' for some weeks and were clearly unhappy with what they had seen.
'popular'
Whether or not they see something different in Shaw remains to be seen of course but for the majority of supporters it is results on the pitch that matter and the popular ex-City defender gets his chance to stake another claim for the job when his side travel to Crewe Alexandra this weekend.
Promoted from League Two last season, the Railwaymen were beaten 5-1 at Brentford last weekend but manager Steve Davis was happy with the response he got from his side in defeat at West Ham in midweek.
"I think we should what we capable of, showed some ability and got Saturday`s result out of the system a bit," said Davis, whose skipper Ashley Westwood was strongly linked with a deadline day move to Aston Villa.
David McGoldrick meanwhile comes into contention for City after his loan switch from Nottingham Forest.
