Kilbane spot on for Sky Blues

A keenly contested League Cup tie between Dagenham & Redbridge and Coventry City, the first ever meeting of the two teams, was settled in dramatic fashion in favour of the Sky Blues as Kevin Kilbane converted a last-minute penalty to put Andy Thorn's men into the second round.

Thorn handed competitive debuts to new signings Reece Brown, Kevin Kilbane and Callum Ball while also showing his faith in young midfielder Billy Daniels by starting him alongside Kilbane in the centre of the park.

Dagenham, seeking their first ever victory in the competition, pushed City all the way but were unable to find their way past a stern Sky Blue rearguard.

Thorn's men gradually began to have more of the play but extra-time was still looking like the only outcome before a challenge on another debutant, substitute Stephen Elliott, handed Kilbane his opportunity.

Speaking to the official club website after the game Thorn was more than happy with the defensive steel shown by his side.

'I thought the lads were really resolute,' he said.

The draw for the second round takes place on Wednesday afternoon.

In the second round for the first time in four years, can't argue with that.

what a good start after all the negatives this week off the field. Let us have plenty more 1-0 to the Sky Blues
