Sky Blues snap up Irish striker

Coventry City started their summer signings on Monday afternoon with a one-year contract agreed with Stephen Elliott after his departure from Hearts.

The 28-year-old striker has been described by Andy Thorn as an extremely hard working player who was interesting Championship clubs and he sounds like a younger replacement for Clive Platt with more experience of playing at a higher level from his time with Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland.

Elliott ended his stay in Edinburgh on a high note as his side thrashed their local rivals Hibernian in the Scottish Cup Final.

City, who have also confirmed another pre-season game against Andy Morrell's Wrexham on Tuesday 31st July, will be pleased to finally get a signing on board with the promise of more to come as Thorn continues searching for players to strengthen his squad.

Kevin Kilbane is training with the Sky Blues while attacking midfielder John Fleck continues to be linked.

The manager will however have to find a replacement for Martin Cranie after he rejected the club's offer of a new contract.

Nice to see things moving in both directions with signings as well as departures. Players were always going to leave once we got relegated but you have to be seen to be bringing in new players to give supporters any hope of it getting better. Don't know much about Elliott but he's played at a good level and is a good age.
