Coventry City 1 West Ham United 2

'Look they are a Premiership club who pay Premiership wages to Premiership footballers but we're going to give them a real game.'

That was Coventry City manager Andy Thorn's rallying cry ahead of Saturday's big game at the Ricoh Arena when his side side took on Championship favourites West Ham United.

The two sides went into the game in contrasting form, the Sky Blues struggling near the foot of the table while the Hammers had made a solid start to life in the lower tier after last season's relegation.

Thorn also said in midweek that he felt his side were showing signs of getting back to their form of late last season and he was proved right as the Sky Blues more than matched the Hammers throughout.

Sharp in the tackle, confident on the ball and possessing more than a threat than in recent games, City were good value for their half-time lead, given to them by Platt's excellent finish after McSheffrey's clever dummy.

Able to bring on a player of the calibre of Carlton Cole at the break, West Ham were always going to launch a second-half fightback but they created little of note and were more than fortunate to come away with all three points, their winner in particular coming from the kind of luck that tends to follow teams at the top of the table around.

The home side were warmly applauded off at the end and callers to CWR afterwards were in positive mood. City now have to repeat their performance level in every game in order to climb away from the foot of the table.
