The 1989/90 season saw Coventry City top Division One at one stage, reach the semi-finals of the League Cup and enjoy wins over Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City among others.
With the current debate over crowds at the Ricoh Arena it is interesting to note that despite all of the achievements listed above, the Sky Blues registered crowds at Highfield Road of, among others, 8,294, 10,012 and 10,037 for league fixtures in English football's top division.
The talk of 'stayaway' fans is nothing new and the reasons given have probably not changed either. Cost, style of football, dislike of the manager etc would all have been cited but then, as now the reality is that City have a hardcore following of around the 10,000 mark who will be there come what may.
Not that low crowds stopped the Sky Blues spending money in their bid to (believe it or not) become genuine title contenders. The club record transfer fee was broken twice to add Kevin Drinkell and Kevin Gallacher to the squad.
Both players had impressive starts to their careers with the club but Drinkell faded rapidly while Gallacher went on to become a real crowd favourite.
And in another echo of recent season City had a disappointing end to this campaign after a superb 4-2 win at Nottingham Forest in March had given them hope of a top six finish. After that however it was just one victory from eleven with a final game hammering by Liverpool for good measure.
To win the editor`s own VHS copy of this piece of Sky Blues nostalgia, answer the following question. Which club did City sign Kevin Gallagher from?
