'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Peter Ridsdale manages the impossible

It is fair to say that Coventry City's current owners are not the most popular people in the 'city of peace and reconciliation' but if there is one way to make the mysterious Sisu group look good then that is to link the Sky Blues with a takeover bid that involves Peter Ridsdale.

The former Leeds and Cardiff City chairman is not remembered too fondly in either West Yorkshire or South Wales and is currently aiming to complete a deal for crisis-hit Plymouth Argyle.

Wednesday's Coventry Telegraph quotes Ridsdale as saying he was involved in trying to buy Coventry City a year ago but the story also makes it clear that he is not involved in any way with Gary Hoffman or his investors.

'fair play'

As for Sisu themselves the current way of thinking amongst those involved in running the club is to get City up to speed with new rules on financial fair play that are to be introduced to the Football League in the near future.

There is a solid argument to be made about living within your means and only spending a certain percentage of what you earn without gambling the future of a club on making it into the Premier League (what will Leicester's current owners do in a couple of years time if Sven hasn't got them up?).

However Sisu have left themselves without any real credibility to make that argument on behalf of CCFC and cannot escape from the fact that from the outside looking in the 'fair play' rules are being used as a cover for cutting costs to the bone.
