Next Coventry City manager: rumour round-up

Another year, another search for a new manager at Coventry City after Monday's announcement that Aidy Boothroyd had been sacked following a dismal run of form since Christmas.

Andy Thorn's impressive transition to switching from Chief Scout to Caretaker Manager took some heat out of the initial rumour frenzy as did the lack of an stand-out candidate from the list of names mentioned in connection with the job.

A national newspaper report on Friday morning suggested that Roberto Di Matteo was the most likely successor to Boothroyd but closer to home that suggestion was shot down by the Coventry Telegraph, quoting the Italian's agent Athole Still.

A couple of candidates have also been thrown up by the regional press elsewhere.

The Sheffield Star believes that former Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell has admirers on the Sky Blues board while Carlisle manager Greg Abbott told the News & Star that he wasn't aware of reports linking him with the job.

"It`s not something I was aware of until somebody told me when I came into the ground yesterday morning.

"But a lot of people in the game would probably understand how well we are doing at this club with what we have available,' said the United supremo.
