'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Aidy Boothroyd happy with start

'With Portsmouth's position we had to focus on ourselves and make sure we were right and got off to a good start.'

He added,'We deserved the victory and it was certainly a hard fought win.

'There were still some fantastic players on their team sheet when they brought it through to the dressing room.'

New signings Richard Keogh, Lee Carsley, Lukas Jutkiewicz, Gary McSheffrey and returning Michael Doyle all played their part but it was Nathan Cameron who took the eye in central defence.

Together with Ben Turner they won everything that was thrown at them and with Richard Wood and James McPake on the bench it shows the strength of the squad that is now at the Ricoh.

The team performance was summed up in the 90th minute when Gary McSheffrey ran 40 yards to close down a Pompey attack and it is this commitment we must take into Tuesday nights visit to the Lancashire coast.
