City spot on with first signing of the summer

Having declared his intention to make an 'impact' signing first up, new Coventry City manager Aidy Boothroyd has done just that with the deal to bring Gary McSheffrey back to the Ricoh Arena.

'I know about Gary's affiliation with Coventry City and while that's a very positive thing, we are bringing him in because of his qualities as a player and a character, not just because he is a local lad,' said Boothroyd after the last formalities of the signing were completed.

At the age of 27 time is still very much on the player's side and Boothroyd is spot on with his comments but will also be savvy enough to know that signing McSheffrey will earn him instant goodwill from Sky Blues fans.

It's a no-lose deal for either side as the player himself looks to get back on track after a couple of frustrating seasons and write the third chapter of his City career after bursting onto the scene as a 16-year-old and then come back from being made available on virtually a free transfer to become a £4m signing for Birmingham.
