'Sometimes a victory like that is better than winning 5-0,' said Chris Coleman after seeing his side withstand a late Scunthorpe rally to gain a fully deserved three points on Saturday.
The Sky Blues looked full of confidence as they kept hold of the ball well, got midfielders in behind the hard-working strikers and did everything but score for 55 minutes until Jon Stead's strike.
The game was turned on it's head when Leon Barnett was sent off but Kieren Westwood saved the resulting penalty to fire up the 10 men, who kept attacking and were rewarded when Sammy Clingan made it two with a curling free-kick.
'It was a good goal from Clingan, good free-kick,' said opposing boss Nigel Adkins.
'It's gone over the wall which is a difficult skill so give him a little bit of credit on that.'
Grant McCann netted late on for the Iron but they could not find another way past a resolute rearguard, leaving City just three points off a play-off place and with any thought of relegation now banished.
Coleman concluded: 'We are definitely looking up instead of down now, even though we've played one or two games more than some others.'
