'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Former boss on Liverpool talk

Ex-Coventry City manager Gary McAllister has been speaking about reports that he has turned down the chance to become reserve team manager at another of his former clubs, Liverpool.

He said: 'I should make it clear I was not offered the reserve team manager's job, but we spoke about it.

'I went to Liverpool to meet Rafa (Benitez) and Rick (Parry) and we had a chat about the possibility of me returning. There is a vacancy on the coaching staff at the moment and we discussed it.

'I don't need to say how exciting and tempting an opportunity it was for me. Under any other circumstances I'd have jumped at the chance.

'But after we spoke I thought about the situation and realised the timing is just not quite right for me at this moment, so I told Rafa not to consider me for the job.

McAllister stepped down from his role with the Sky Blues to care for his wife Denise who sadly passed away recently and he is unwilling to move away from the Midlands at present as his children are settled there.

Another former Coventry City manager, Peter Reid, has today been linked with a return to Sunderland as director of football if Niall Quinn completes his takeover of the North-East club.
