Scunthorpe vs Coventry: How far have we come?

Coventry City travel to Scunthorpe for a crucial live TV game on Sunday, a fixture that can also be used as a yardstick for the Chris Coleman era at the Ricoh Arena.

The Sky Blues' last visit to Lincolnshire was on the first day of March 2008 and was Coleman's third game in charge following the sacking of Iain Dowie.

After an opening win against Leicester, City had been brushed aside at Burnley and then, despite taking the lead against Scunthorpe, the home side hit back to score twice (Jack Cork netting the winner) and boost their hopes of avoiding the drop while deepening our relegation fears.

The manager and chairman have said often this season that the current City squad has greater quality than the one they inherited and, reading the line-up from that day it is hard not to agree.

Although Scott Dann and Daniel Fox were in the side, so too were Kevin Thornton, Julian Gray and Michael Hughes.

Leon Best is likely to be the only City player who played to do so again on Sunday and he of course is a much improved player from 20 months ago.

Two improved displays should see the Sky Blues in better heart and another positive result is needed before the arrival of league leaders Newcastle United.

progress is being made both on and off the field and this current group of players are a cut above what we had 20 months ago.
