A-Z of Coventry City transfers: P for Pearce

£25,000 spent on a part-time footballer, part-time electrician by Coventry City manager Bobby Gould in 1983 set in motion one of the most successful and popular football careers of the late 1980's and 1990's.

Stuart Pearce arrived from non-league Wealdstone with a reputation as a tough-tackling left-back and, thrown straight into the top flight of English football showed exactly why with a barnstorming debut against Queens Park Rangers in November 1983.

Pearce was a key figure in the relegation battles of that season and the following one, before being snapped up by Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest. The rest is well-known.

City also made a handsome profit on another non-league defender called Pearce.

Andy, signed from Halesowen for £15,000 in the summer of 1990, was a tall centre-half who never gave less than 100%.

He made 68 league appearances before a £500,000 move to Sheffield Wednesday in 1993.
