A-Z of Coventry City transfers: I for Inter

Coventry City's record transfer fee is unlikely to ever surpass the 13m paid by Inter Milan for the services of the then 20-year-old Robbie Keane in August 2000.

Despite the cash that came in, it remains a question of what might have been for Sky Blues fans', especially given that half the money was immediately spent on Craig Bellamy.

Signed for 6m a summer earlier, the Irishman had made an instant impact with two goals on his debut and was the key man in a side that, at home at least, produced some of the best performances ever given by a Sky Blues XI, including the thrilling 3-2 win over Arsenal live on TV.

Keane made only 13 appearances for the Serie A giants and was back in the Premier League just four months after leaving Highfield Road.

Unfortunately it was in the white shirt of Leeds, not in sky blue, and to make matters worse Keane netted a winning goal against City at Elland Road in January 2001 as his former club slipped towards the relegation trapdoor.

"Ever" is a strong word. Premiership defenders are now being sold at more than 15m. If you've the ambition to claw your way back up the table then maybe some new thinking is in order. Just a thought.
