A-Z of Coventry City transfers: G for Gould

A-Z of Coventry City transfers: G for Gould

Bobby Gould enjoyed some massive highs and crushing lows during his two spells as Coventry City manager but the former Sky Blues striker certainly left the club in credit on his transfer dealings during those years.

In his second stint in the dug-out, Gould spotted a young defender named Phil Babb playing for Bradford City and invested £500,000 in him ahead of the first ever Premier League season.

His successor, Phil Neal, reaped the benefit when Babb was sold after the 1994 World Cup for a British record transfer fee for a defender, Liverpool's £3.75m bid allowing Neal to sign striker Dion Dublin.

Less profitable for the club but certainly of benefit to the Sky Blues, Nottingham Forest, England and the player himself was Gould's decision to risk £25,000 on part-time pro Stuart Pearce of Wealdstone in 1983.

In no time at all this uncompromising left-back was a fan favourite and a player marked down for bigger and better things.
