A-Z of Coventry City transfers: E for Embargo

October 2007 saw a low point in Coventry City's transfer history when an embargo was placed on the club for missing an instalment payment to Southampton in the deal that had seen Leon Best join the club the previous summer.

The news came amidst the general gloom surrounding the club's financial situation, with an American takeover stalling and administration looming.

Manager Iain Dowie had led the team to a storming start in the league and a famous win against Manchester United but found himself unable to make any loan additions as the Championship slog took its toll.

Ray Ranson and SISU eventually completed their takeover in mid-December and set about paying the outstanding fees and getting the embargo lifted.

Scott Dann and Daniel Fox were the first signings made under the new regime but it wasn't to be Dowie who reaped the benefit.

Instead, Chris Coleman was the man entrusted with the transfer budget.
