Time for Thornton to shine?

Time for Thornton to shine?

Kevin Thornton looks set for only his 11th league start as a Coventry City player when the Sky Blues travel to Burnley on Tuesday night.

Handed his chance early on in Saturday's game against Leicester by Stephen Hughes' injury, Thornton provided a spark and energy to the midfield that has been severely lacking in recent weeks.

It's the kind of thing the 21-year-old has done before, notably at Hull last season when he scored the winning goal but on Saturday he had 83 minutes to make an impact rather than his usual 10 minute cameo.

His last start came ironically in the 2-0 defeat at Leicester in January and seemed to add weight to the theory that Thornton is not a 90-minute man.

So often impressive for the reserves, maybe now Thornton will get a run of games and not be constantly looking over his shoulder for fear of the axe.

***Update*** Thornton has since been quoted in the Coventry Telegraph as saying: "I was disappointed the last time I got a start, which was against Leicester at their place, because everything seemed to go wrong," he said, "but hopefully I can take my chance now and play more games.

"My game is just about getting on the ball and playing.

"I am not going to be winning headers and tackles and all that.

"I want the ball and like to make things happen, and you feel good when you do that."
